Oil and Gas: Analysis Post-Processing Automation in Abaqus
Victor Habbick / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
While designing new flex joints for sub-sea oil pipelines, the client was spending four or five days post-processing each analysis. Intellect Engineering developers, after conducting a detailed examination of the client's process, created an automated plugin for Abaqus that reduced the client's post-processing time of each analysis to less than an hour.
Takeaway: Intellect Engineering reduced the client's post-processing time per analysis from four or five days per analysis to less than one hour (a reduction of over 95%).

Aerospace: Automated Gauge Optimization Setup of Aircraft Structures
coward_lion / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Engineers at Intellect Engineering automated the decomposition of aircraft structures in preparation for gauge optimization. This reduced the time required for this stage of optimization setup from sixteen hours to about 45 minutes.
Takeaway: Intellect Engineering reduced the time required to setup the gauge optimization by over 90%, which allowed more rapid re-designs and subsequent optimizations.

Alternative Energy: Structural Optimization of a Shipping Container
Victor Habbick / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
The client needed an intermodal shipping container to carry multiple 2,000-gallon pressure tanks during transportation and storage. Intellect Engineering consultants performed topology, size, and shape optimizations to design a frame structure to protect and support the tanks, while also reducing the manufacturing cost of the frame. The resulting frame structure was both lighter and more cost-effective than a standard shipping container of the same size, and supports more severe drop load scenarios without suffering significant damage.
Takeaway: Intellect Engineering designed a more robust and cost-effective structure.

Oil and Gas: Automated CAD/CFD Model Creation of Natural Gas Heat Exchanger
Victor Habbick / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Intellect Engineering developed a parameter-based automation script that creates CAD and CFD models for the design and analysis of heat exchangers for an oil field services company. These burners are designed to heat high-pressure liquids at the well head, either during the fracking process, or in preparation for shipping raw oil. This automation enabled our client to significantly reduce the time required per design iteration, thus more quickly arriving at an optimal design.
Takeaway: Intellect Engineering reduced the design creation and pre-processing time significantly, resulting in more design iterations and a more optimal final solution.

Software Examples
Model Versioning Software
Have you ever spent a significant amount of time working on a model, then gone to open a previous model and accidentally ended up saving over the one you intended to open? This lightweight software creates a back-up copy of the model each time the user clicks save, as well as a summary of the commands that were executed since the last save.

Abaqus Solution Monitor
Intellect Engineering developed a cross-platform program that monitors Abaqus results files as a solution is running, reporting various factors of convergence for non-linear runs, including any user-specified parameters.
Multi-User Finite Element Pre-Processor Prototype
This was written as part of Jared Briggs' (Founder of Intellect Engineering) Masters research at Brigham Young University. This software allows multiple analysts to simultaneously operate on an analysis model, collaborating in real time. All commands and processes are executed on a multi-threaded server.
This software was only a prototype, and showed significant promise in decreasing the time required to pre-process large, complex models. Further development is currently underway, including implementations using commercial systems. See this site or contact us for more information about this type of collaborative engineering research.
